Frequently Asked Questions You really can’t get an abortion in Juneau? No. Local women must travel at great expense, inconvenience and sometimes risk to Anchorage or the lower 48 to obtain a safe, legal abortion. This appalling “service gap” is not due to lack of equipped medical facilities or lack of demand. We believe abortion must be part of comprehensive health care offered in our community, and we are actively seeking to improve options here in Juneau. Contact us if you would like to be part of this effort. Where can I get information on reproductive health services? JPCC maintains an updated list of providers in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. We also have information on funding sources and low-interest loans. Call us at: (907) 463-1548. Confidentiality is assured. What is the Crisis Pregnancy Center or Care Net? The CPC or Care Net is a local anti-choice operation whose purpose is to talk women out of having abortions. Under the guise of “counseling”, they present biased and medically questionable propaganda to women who have come seeking advice about their options. The CPC/Care Net does not provide referral services for abortions. Why does it matter if our local elected officials are pro-choice? Our State Representatives and Senators deal with many bills aimed at curtailing our reproductive freedom. A few recent examples: parental consent for teens seeking contraception; parental consent for minors seeking an abortion; a constitutional amendment allowing public hospitals to deny abortion access on "moral” not medical grounds; so-called partial-birth abortion ban; and numerous other infringements on women’s medical autonomy and privacy. In addition, pro-active efforts, such as a campaign to get contraception covered under insurance, need legislative support. The City Assembly oversees appointments to Bartlett Regional Hospital’s Board. We believe that the hospital has a duty to the community to provide abortions, and we must have an open-minded Board. Furthermore, Assembly members can influence others, and they themselves often move on to hold higher office, where reproductive rights issues frequently arise. Finally, we must remind all our elected officials that we consider reproductive freedom a basic right. The School Board oversees the Teen Health Center, which has been a source of controversy from the outset. As a result, the Center is always under threat and is limited in its ability to address the needs of teens. We must maintain a Board that is committed to maintaining and broadening the scope of the Center's mission. How can I get involved? |
